U/G Tent for Sanctuary

Post by Mike Bottomley on Wed Mar 15, 2017 10:50 am

See link below for idea for U/G tent.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0f_5fAfjiLOc3VlQ0l6azZIX2c/view?usp=sharing

Essentially involves making the frame out of readily existing thick tent poles available in 2-2.3 m lengths, and 3 and 4-way connectors. Prob needs some guys attached to boulders to keep the frame stable, or even drilling holes for poles to drop in to.

The biggest problem (as usual) is getting the material for the tent. In past, have used old parachute canopies.

Thoughts???

Re tent material, this might work:

Just need to check on what the material is and how breathable it might be?

What do people think of this???

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10T-Shoshone-500-10-person-teepee-tent-pyramid-tent-sewn-ground-sheet-ca-/381912025475?hash=item58ebbb0983

Great size, good price, and will be able to get 10 mats laid down inside, prob one or two more if required.

Can use drop-in anchors in floor for fixing guys to, as well as boulders.

13KG, which isnt ridiculous, plus that weight will reduce when remove pegs and extra sheet/pole from bag (shown on image of tent). Plus when load split into two bags, wont be an issue.

Ok, so maybe not the most breathable of materials, but it will breathe a little and has good vents in side and top of tent. Condensation is going to be a problem whatever we do. Solution: run stoves in morning and make sure sleeping bags dried off before putting back in dry bags

Looks much more affordable than the DIY route. Could save a bit of weight by rigging up a line instead of the pole if possible (not been to the Sanctuary so might not work). Breathability probably not worth thinking about in a 100% humidity environment - teepees work well for hot tenting but have less usable space than with a jerry rigged parachute with vertical walls, might struggle to get 10 people getting in when sat up and facing into the middle...

Thanks for your comments Ben! Good point re the shape of the teepee tent. The sanctuary chamber is great in the sense we have a big, flat floor space. Of course this makes it difficult to have a tent without a frame as walls too far apart to just use string to hang the shelter up. There is a 12 man teepee option which could work and still good price. Suppose most of time we'll just be sat down trying to get dry and cooking so might not be too bad.

A possible bonus of a teepee type shelter is that it might help avoid condensation dripping - it's much more likely to run down the wall to the floor at the edge than it would be in a shelter with a flat/shallow roof.

I love it, all these hardened cavers living in a hippy style Tippee 600m underground LOL

I'll have to bring my prayer flags with me sunny

Even if it proves to be totally impractical, it should look quite good! :-)
